Bevier Summer Public Health Internship Program F.A.Q.s

What is the Bevier Internship program?

The Bevier Internship Program is a competitive Public Health internship program for Public Health major and minors at 香港澳门资料大全 that provides a stipend and housing for an 8-week internship during the summer. The students receive academic credit for the internship as well. Students are expected to complete a substantive project, either independently or with a team, over the course of the internship. Past Bevier Interns have worked at a wide variety of government agencies and non-profit organizations. For example, students have completed internships at the CDC, Georgia WAND, the Georgia Department of Public Health, Global Dialogues, The Task Force for Global Health and The Clarkston Community Center.

Support for the Bevier Internship program has been provided through the generosity of Pamela Bevier '61.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Bevier internship program?

In order to be eligible to apply for the Bevier Summer Internship Program, students must:
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA;
  • Be a current sophomore or junior
  • Be a declared Public Health major or minor
  • Intend to enroll full time at Agnes Scott in the year following the internship

*Internship sites may set additional eligibility requirements for their specific projects.

How do students apply for the Bevier Internship Program?

Students must attend the Bevier Internship information session for information about the application process. Application forms are available on the PH Majors and Minors Moodle course. Students must enroll in this course on Moodle to submit their application forms as well (using a Moodle assignment folder).

In addition to the application forms, students must submit an unofficial transcript and a faculty recommendation with their applications.

Information sessions for students will be held in January, and application deadlines are in early February.

How are students placed in internships?

The Bevier Internship Program is a matched internship program. Organizations in the Atlanta area submit descriptions of their organizations and the proposed internship projects, along with eligibility requirements for each project. Students then indicate their top three projects in their application materials. The selection committee chooses the top candidates (~6 interns per year) and shares their application materials with their selected internship sites. Internship sites have the ability to turn down proposed candidates, but there is no guarantee that they will get another intern this year if they do so. If a site turns down a selected candidate, we then place that student in their second or third choice site.

What do students need to do to get academic credit for the internship?

Bevier interns are required to complete the internship for credit.

  1. Register to take PH 370 (Public Health internship seminar) when you sign-up for fall courses. Students take PH 370 the fall after they complete their internships.
  2. Complete a series of reflective journal entries and short assignments during the internship. These will be reviewed and assessed by an Agnes Scott faculty member. The internship site supervisor does not need to worry about the academic component.
  3. Take PH 370 in the fall, after you complete your internship.
  4. Give a presentation on your internship project(s) at the Undergraduate Health and Society conference in November.

What are the internship site supervisor’s responsibilities?

The internship site supervisor is responsible for creating a meaningful and substantial project for the student to work on during the 8-week internship. If the student completes the project prior to the end of the 8 weeks, the site supervisor should be prepared to come up with an additional project. The site supervisor should provide the student with guidance, instruction and constructive feedback throughout the course of the internship. The site supervisor should also complete a performance evaluation for the student at the end of the internship.

What are the Agnes Scott faculty responsibilities?

The Agnes Scott Public Health department faculty will read the students’ weekly journal entries over the course of the summer and respond to any questions from students. The faculty will also check to make sure that students are completing the other required assignments. The instructor for PH 370 will use these assignments during the semester as the basis for discussions and other assignments.
