Understanding Your Financial Aid Offer

Once you’ve received your financial aid offer, you may have questions. We try to keep our offer as understandable as possible, but we know that financial aid can be a tricky subject. That’s why our admission counselors offer one-on-one financial aid conversations to students and families to get questions answered.

If you have quick questions, however, we’ve tried to answer several  of them below:

Cost of Attendance

The estimated Cost of Attendance section on your financial aid offer contains two categories: costs payable to the college and other estimated costs.

Costs payable to the college include the items that you will be billed for by Agnes Scott over the course of fall and spring semesters. This includes Tuition, Housing & Dining (formerly known as Room & Board) and your Student Activity Fee.

Other estimated costs are costs that we provide a numerical estimate for to help you budget. These are estimates, however, and will differ for each student. These include Books & Supplies, Personal Expenses, Travel, Student Health Insurance and U.S. Passport Fees. Students are not required to purchase student health insurance if they waive out of the insurance during the waiver period.

The amounts of your Cost of Attendance may change annually with inflation or other changes. Agnes Scott is committed to keeping annual increases low.

Scholarships & Grants

The Scholarships & Grants section is a combination of merit-based aid and need-based aid; everything in this section are items that do not have to be repaid. Items you may see in this section:

This is the scholarship you typically know about at the time of admission and is based on your application for admission. Students typically can renew this for up to four years at Agnes Scott as long as you meet your renewal eligibility (included in your admission letter for each scholarship) and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
If you’ve received any additional special scholarships from Agnes Scott that required a separate application, such as the Nannette Hopkins Music Scholarship, it would show up here. Again, students typically can renew this for up to four years as long as you meet renewal eligibility and Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Agnes Scott offers a handful of grants based on participation in the admission process, such as the Great Scott Grant for attendance at a fall open house and the Scottie Scholar Grant for attendance at an Admitted Scottie Day experience. Students may renew these grants for up to four years provided they meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Federal Pell Grants are awarded by the federal government based on the information from your FAFSA and your determined family SAI. The maximum award for 2023-2024 award year was $7,395 annually. The amount and eligibility of Pell Grants may change annually as students must refile the FAFSA with updated income information each year.
Federal SEOG are awarded based on need determined by the FAFSA and range from $100 to $4,000 annually. Agnes Scott receives a very small amount of SEOG funding, so a very small percentage of students will see this on their financial aid offer. SEOG amount and eligibility may vary based on updated annual FAFSA information.

If you are a Georgia resident (with a permanent address in the state of Georgia for the 12 months immediately preceding your enrollment at Agnes Scott), you may qualify for either the Georgia HOPE Scholarship or Zell Miller Scholarship. Both are merit-based grants for Georgia residents.

For 2023-2024, the full-time HOPE amount at private colleges is $4,992. To maintain HOPE eligibility each year, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0. HOPE funds can only be received for 127 attempted hours of study.

The full-time Zell Miller award for private colleges for 2023-2024 is $5,970. To maintain eligibility each year, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.3. Zell Miller funds can only be received for 127 attempted hours of study.

Students may receive either HOPE or Zell Miller but not both. Incoming students should be aware that Agnes Scott does not add Zell Miller Scholarships to financial aid offers until they are verified by the Georgia Student Finance Commission, generally in June.

If you qualify as a Georgia resident, you may also receive the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant. This non-need-based grant is awarded to Georgia residents attending an eligible private college or university full-time. The amount for 2023-2024 is $1000.

Loans & Federal Work Study (Self-Help Aid)

This section is considered “self-help” aid because students must take actions to receive them.

Federal work study funds are contingent upon finding employment at Agnes Scott and are awarded after work has been completed. Students who receive federal work study will not have those funds accessible for the initial billing process. Federal work study eligibility is based on the FAFSA and may change annually. Learn more about work study here.

Federal direct loans are funds that may be applied toward your Cost of Attendance and must be repaid. You must accept or decline your loan eligibility by logging into your portal. Eligibility for federal loans may change annually based on the FAFSA. Learn more about loans and repayment here.
