The Real Estate and Economic Development concentration equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and influence the dynamic relationship between real estate markets, economic growth, and urban planning.  Grounded in the principles of urban and regional planning, this concentration emphasizes the planner’s role in guiding economic development that supports inclusive economic opportunity and strengthens the built environment. Students gain foundational knowledge in real estate markets, finance, development, and law while exploring how these elements intersect with zoning, land use planning, housing policy, and sustainable urban form. Core coursework in community planning and site analysis builds a critical understanding of regulatory frameworks, design principles, and equitable development strategies. Technical training in geographic information systems (GIS), quantitative analysis, and data analytics and visualization, enhance students' technical expertise, enabling them to assess and interpret spatial and economic trends, assess development potential, and support evidence-based decision-making. Electives in housing policy, economic geography, and urban development offer further specialization, while internship opportunities provide hands-on experience in real-world planning and economic development settings. Program Description

Real estate refers to physical land, and the structures and resources attached to it, while economic development refers to the programs, policies, and activities that seek to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for communities and individuals across cities, towns, and regions. Real estate and economic development are intimately linked, and geographers, planners, and sustainability experts play important roles in assessing the progress, pace, and direction of economic development and real estate markets.  They offer valuable insights and guidance to cities, towns, and communities seeking to ensure equitable, sustainable, and prosperous development trajectories.

The Real Estate and Economic Development concentration offers students a chance to develop expertise in real estate investment, law, economics, valuation, finance, and development.  Students gain insights into the processes of site analysis, selection, design and construction, reuse and redevelopment, building codes, zoning law, and the dynamic role that real estate markets play in the economy.  Emphasis is placed on the unique role that urban and regional planners can play in supporting and shaping real estate and economic development
